Planning your wedding reception

There was a time when fathers simply signed the checks for the food and the venue without complaining over the tab. There was a time when couples added more courses to the menu, out of the blue and without feeling any remorse. But, thanks to the economic meltdown, that time has long passed. Today, couples hold wedding reception planning with one goal in mind - to find ways to throw a fab reception without breaking the bank. Here are some ideas.

Book smart. Avoid peak seasons (June to September, in most countries), weekends, and evenings. During those times, you'll have to pay more for the venue and the food. If your goal is to economize, keep in mind that Saturday dinners will cost you more than Sunday luncheons or Friday night cocktails.

Make use of a reception registry. If you're badly strapped for cash and have friends and family who wouldn't mind an informal wedding, why not set up your own reception registry? It works just like a pot-luck --- guests sign up and indicate what dish they will bring, instead of a present.

Utilize local talent. You don't need A-list names to make your reception rock. To get the best bang for your buck, use the services of a local DJ or band. If even that is too pricey for you, get in touch with the local college's music department. They can give you a list of student musicians who wouldn't mind keeping your guests entertained for a very small sum.

There is no question your reception will be the single most expensive part of your wedding. But, with careful wedding reception planning, you can spend less, save more, and make each dollar you spend go the extra mile.
